Salford comedy conference to discuss Brass Eye, Father Ted and Finnish (un)funnies | Print |  Email to a friend
Thursday, 29 May 2008
How-Do has just heard the best ever name for a university seminar – ‘Don’t tell me I’m still on that fecking island’…

…The fact that the second best name – ‘What a nice lad…he does take his jihad seriously though doesn’t he?’ – comes from the same conference surely marks the event out as a thing of rarefied beauty.

How-Do has just heard the best ever name for a university seminar – ‘Don’t tell me I’m still on that fecking island’…
Drink, feck, arse, girls, Finnish comedy...
Both seminars (and many more on subjects such as paedophilia in Brass Eye and Aussie machismo) are part of the upcoming ‘Funny People, Those Foreigners’ international comedy conference taking place at Salford University on 5 and 6 June.

The event features academics from as far a field as Norway and Australia, converging on the North West to discuss the serious side of comedy… not to mention why Finnish humour just isn’t funny outside of Finland.

Dr Chris Lee of the University’s School of Media, Music & Performance explained why a comedy conference is needed

He said: “The understanding of foreign cultures doesn’t just come from looking at so-called high art forms like literature.

“It can come from looking at the forms of culture that most people enjoy - and comedy is certainly one of these.

Other matters up for discussion include the joy of Father Ted and just what exactly is acceptable when it comes to playing for racial laughs.

Salford has an admirable track record when it comes to producing its own funny men, with Peter Kay and Jason Manford having both graduated from performance courses in recent years.

Doesn't matter what country, creed, timezone, civilization or any other variables you throw in, comedy is universal and as important and recognizable as a smile.

Music is the same way and similar to music comedy soothes the soul because it erases the bad times when it is present.

So bring on the finnish humor if it's funny they will laugh and laugh.
