After a high profile campaign backed by the likes of famous Salford son Sir Ben Kingsley, The Salford Film Festival returns for its fourth year this month with a clutch of exclusive screenings and free events.
Partially in owner of his contribution to the campaign - and, of course, his global renown - Kingsley’s films form the centrepiece of this year’s proceedings, with five of his most famous works showing. In addition to this ‘Joy Division: The Documentary’ will shine a light on the seminal band (currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to ‘Control’), with an introduction and Q&A session fronted by bass-wielding legend Peter ‘Hooky’ Hook. The mostly free festival, which touches down across a series of the city’s venues from 24-28 November, will also be showcasing local community films and pieces from more established filmmakers; such as Nico Icon, by Stella Grundy, and the directorial debut of current Eastenders star (and local lad) Stephen Lord. Speaking about the line-up this year, programme manager Steve Balshaw noted: “This is our biggest, most ambitious festival yet. We’ve got recent Hollywood films, popular classics, difficult-to-see cult items, and a lot of sharp, hard-edged new work from the local community. It’s a volatile mix, but they’re always the best kind.” http://www.salfordfilmfestival.org.uk
