Legendary female rap group Salt-N-Pepa will be the subject of a new documentary, produced by Made in Manchester, set to air on digital network 1Xtra on 23 January.
Let's talk about Salt-N-Pepa The bolshy girl group, that scored worldwide hits with ‘Push It’ and ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’, have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity of late due to a reality TV series appearing on VH1 in the US. ‘Salt-n-Pepa: Push It’ will capitalise on this, examining the girls’ motivations, talents and the legacy they left from their hits in the 80s and 90s. An interview with DJ Spinderalla at her LA home will form the centrepiece of the documentary, which will also be fleshed out with anecdotes and opinions from luminaries such as Trevor Nelson, Omar and Jill Scott. 1Xtra’s MistaJam will take on the presenting duties. Speaking about the group MIM’s creative director Ashley Byrne commented: “Long before so-called ‘girl power’ Salt-N-Pepa had been an inspiration to women worldwide with songs that tackled tricky subjects like safe sex, Aids and racism. These girls from New York City proved very quickly that whatever the boys could do, the girls could do too.” The documentary follows on from MIM’s critically acclaimed Les Dawson work and is the firm’s first ever commission with 1Xtra. www.madeinmanchester.tv Something to add?
