ITV Studios has announced the cast of Mrs Biggs, its new 5-part drama based around the life of Charmian, the ex-wife of Great Train Robber, Ronald Biggs. The production team will be filming in Manchester for the next 5 weeks before heading to Australia.
Sheridan Smith (The Scapegoat, Gavin and Stacey, Two Pints of Lager) will play the title role and Danny Mays (Public Enemies, Ashes to Ashes) will play Biggs. They’ll be joined by Adrian Scarborough (Upstairs Downstairs) and Caroline Goodall (The Good Wife, Schindler’s List), who’ll play Charmian’s parents.
The drama is produced by ITV Studios and written by Jeff Pope (See No Evil: The Moors Murders, The Murder of Stephen Lawrence) and it will tell the tell of Charmian’s life from the moment she met Biggs as a teenager.
"When I received the call to say that I'd got this job I burst into tears. Charmian is an incredible woman, and I'm so lucky that she'll be on hand to support me and give me advice during the shoot. I hope that I can do her story justice,” said Smith.
Mrs Biggs is a co-production with Melbourne’s December Media for Seven Network in Australia and it’s been in development for 4 years.
“Charmian’s is one of the great untold stories of the 20th Century, set against the backdrop of one of the greatest crimes of all times. But at the heart of it is a simple love story between Charmian and Ron,” said Pope.
