Made in Manchester has won its latest commission from Radio 4 for a new documentary exploring the works of American poet Walt Whitman.
Maconie: Bolton bound The show, Walking with Whitman, will be presented by Stuart Maconie and is set to examine the little known link between Whitman and a group of admirers he had, and still has, in Bolton.Co-producer Andrew Edwards explained the connection: "The name Walt Whitman usually encourages thoughts of poetry, comradeship, equality – and America. But few people know about the long association he had with the northern English mill town of Bolton. “In Walking with Whitman, Stuart Maconie heads to the Lancashire Moors to join Whitman fans who travel from all over the world every year on his birthday to recite and celebrate his unique work.” According to some very rudimentary research from How-Do this connection stretches back to a bunch of friends from the town who sent Whitman a birthday card in 1887. He replied with his own greetings and a lasting bond between like-minded groups on both sides of 'the pond' was promptly formed. For a much better understanding of the intertwined histories of the fans and Whitman's work tune into Radio 4 on Sunday 5 July at 4.30pm for MIM's show. www.madeinmanchester.tv Something to add?
