The Amazing Doctor Sober gets Printworks premiere and Downing Street praise | Print |  Email to a friend

A film created by teenage Mancunians that deals with issues of alcohol misuse has scored itself a premiere at The Printworks on 29 October. The team involved in the project has also been invited to meet Gordon Brown on 1 October.

The Amazing Doctor Sober follows the story of Curtis, a youngster whose father has died and whose mother has turned to alcohol to help her cope with the grief.

A film created by teenage Mancunians that deals with issues of alcohol misuse has scored itself a premiere at The Printworks on 29 October. The team involved in the project has also been invited to meet Gordon Brown on 1 October.
'Losing it' on set
The film came about after Lime, a local organisation funded by Comic Relief, ran a series of scriptwriting, acting and film making workshops in Manchester.

From that seed of inspiration the teenagers, under the tutelage of Lime, produced the pilot Losing It, which was then presented exclusively to a parliamentary meeting on teenage binge drinking at the House of Commons, funded by Alcohol Concern.

The acclaim this received led to The Amazing Doctor Sober, which will now be made available, along with a resource pack, to youth groups, organisations and schools that are seen to have vulnerable youngsters.

Kim Wiltshire, community arts project manager at Lime, commented: “I am really proud of all the young people who have been involved in both the Dr Sober and the Losing It projects; they’ve all worked so hard and been so committed and creative.

“To get recognition at a national level through the parliamentary conference and the invitation to No.10 is fantastic, and we’ve also had a lot of interest for the new Dr Sober packs from agencies in all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester.”

this is grea, what a fantastic example of engaging kids to do something really valuable. i wish there had been more of this stuff around when i was a teenager (not THAT long ago admittedly but there certainly wasn't anything like this where i grew up!)
wouldn't it be great if those involved then decide that a career in TV/Script/Film is for them. i'm still finding out what i want to do at 26!
