The Revolution 96.2 claims new Real Radio jingles are ripping them off | Print |  Email to a friend

When How-Do heard the one about the newly re-branded GMG-owned station apparently ‘ripping off’ some jingles from Steve Penk’s Revolution 96.2FM we thought someone was winding us up to be great big April Fools.

For once, however, Penk couldn’t be more serious.

A spokesperson at Revolution informed How-Do that they’d “never seen Steve so upset” before forwarding on a statement that explained the exact cause of his ire.

Penk is up in arms because he thinks that the company that produced the jingles for GMG’s newly re-branded Real Radio in the North West (formerly Century) have basically pulled a fast one.

Penk: upset
He elucidated in a statement: “It’s universally recognised in the radio business that each station needs an instantly-recognisable ‘sonic logo.’

“I paid handsomely to obtain a new jingle package incorporating a really strong five-syllable musical ‘hook’.

“After looking around I commissioned my package from the long-established jingle specialist TM Century in Dallas and was delighted with what they produced for me.

“Because radio is so competitive in our region I signed an agreement which gave me exclusivity in the North West”.

He was then alerted to the new Real Radio jingles, and noted: “When I first heard them I was convinced that someone was winding me up.

Real: in the dog house?
“It’s like they’d listened to our jingles and just ripped them off, it’s as simple as that. They’ve taken our unique, five syllable sequence of notes and attempted to make the four syllables in the words ‘Real Radio’ fit – which they clearly don’t”.

Penk is making it clear that his beef isn’t with GMG, rather the UK-based production firm that created the jingles on their behalf (believed to be 4Music).

He has now informed TM Century, which is said to be taking legal advice on the matter.

You can hear both sets of jingles here

How-Do also contacted GMG Radio with regard to this story. A spokesperson said the firm would not be commenting as, like Penk, they viewed it as being an issue between the individual production companies.

Yes, they are similar. Yawn. I hate radio jingles. Our local radio station The Bee hasn't changed the dreary one they have in years. Or maybe it just seems that way.Who cares? I hit the "off" button as soon as it comes on.
In the greater scheme of things you don't tune in for the jingles. Penk should chill!

He doesn't look so upset from the photo.... ;)

Ninjinster: that was when he worked for Key 103 and wasn't spending his time sitting up in Oldham losing money and getting irate over jingles!

Another pathetic publicity stunt from the increasingly desperate Mr Penk.

In the 80s and 90s when most radio stations where using a company called JAM it was not uncommon to hear the same jingle package on different stations within the same area.

All he's succeeded in doing here is giving more publicity to the launch of Real.

The station's just like the Penk show now. It's rubbish--every other sweeper mentions that it's "home of the Steve Penk breakfast show". They play hour after hour of those silly wind-up phone calls. And when you tune into Penk's morning programme, he sounds like he's going slowly round the twist, getting ever more manic and desperate, whittering on to his dwindling band of listeners.

I was able to see a document (in the public domain) the other day which mentioned that Penk's company, Wind-Up Media Ltd, paid a total of £100k for this station with a deferred consideration of a further £150k. No wonder he's sounding p**sed off.

I agree that its a very hard job to compose jingles , it has ability to make and break your consumers.
