Meanwhile BBC North West Tonight’s Dave Guest was named best reporter on a regional programme, and Granada Reports scooped best news programme for its Hillsborough special.

There were 2 awards for ITV Granada’s regional documentary, Accrington Stanley... Exactly!.

“This region has always stood for entrepreneurialism and invention, and that’s as true of our TV industry as it is elsewhere,” said RTS NW Chair, Helen Bullough.

“The North West continues to shine out as a creative beacon across the industry from outstanding regional coverage and factual series, to innovative comedy, entertainment, and of course drama.

Post production facility, Sumners, is also basking in an award-filled glow, as a third of the winning entries had been through its post production facilities.

"Saturday evening was fantastic achievement for many of our clients and in some small way for the whole Sumners team. Hopefully we are already working on some of next year's successful entries, but our involvement with this year's award winners has been quite spectacular," said joint managing director, Janet Sumner.
