51 staff will be made redundant at ITV Border as ITV look to reduce its workforce to just 13 and close the studios at Durranhill.
Bectu and NUJ representatives are now negotiating on behalf of employees to get better redundancy terms. They believe a number of staff may find difficulties getting another job within the media and will require retraining. While Granada has got off relatively unscathed in the restructure, Border viewers feel they are being sidelined, as their region merges with Tyne Tees. The main complaint is that they will be inundated with news from major cities such as Newcastle and Sunderland and a 15 minute opt-out isn’t enough to cover their region which includes North West England, Southern Scotland and the Isle of Man. They also point out that Border is unique in its size and demographic , and Lookaround reflected that. A recurring fear expressed to How-Do by a number of Border viewers is that they will become home to Tyne Tees’ "and finallys" as a tonic to the murders and job losses in the North East. The ITV changes are part of a £40m economy drive and they are assuring viewers that they will still be catered for. Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
