UTV Radio has confirmed that it is set to close Central Radio, the Preston-based station that only began broadcasting in September 2008.
The group, which currently has 15 stations across mainland Britain, told staff of the decision yesterday and will move quickly to close the operation, with transmissions set to cease on 24 December. The licence for Central is being handed back to industry regulator Ofcom. In a statement released by UTV Calum Macaulay, director of local radio for UTV Media (GB), said: “We won the licence against strong competition, but unfortunately had to launch the station in the middle of the worst recession in memory. "This has meant that over a number of months, we have been looking closely at the station’s viability and unfortunately given the economic climate we have taken the difficult decision to close the station." He continued: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Central FM. The station’s closure is no reflection on the effort and hard work they have put in since the station’s inception and I wish them all success in their future endeavours.”UTV won the licence to broadcast to the Preston, Leyland and Chorley area in December 2006, housing the station in a purpose built studio complex at the Eastway Business Village in Fulwood. Paula Davies was recently promoted to the role of station director at Central. Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
