The new producer of Coronation Street has reportedly rejected tabloid claims that she is set to revamp the line-up of the enduring soap by calling time on a host of the show’s long-serving characters.
Kim Crowther, who was appointed to the job in November, was, according to recent claims in The Sun, looking to axe five of the slightly ‘greyer’ cast members by the end of this year. 'Grey' stars a little happier now? Apparently that claim had some of the high-earning, but increasingly peripheral, veterans of the show on tenterhooks. It was said she was looking to give the show “a younger and sexier feel”, something that a shadowy insider said at the time had made “everyone very edgy, especially the greyer stars.” However, rival paper The Mirror this week reported that the rumours were false and that Crowther apparently believes that “the old-guard artists are crucial to the show.” It was claimed she had also set up meeting with each cast member to discuss their upcoming storylines and reassure them about their futures. The Mirror’s own insider commented: “Kim is steeped in the history of the Street. "She believes the likes of Bill Roache (Ken Barlow), Barbara Knox (Rita Sullivan) and Eileen Derbyshire (Emily Bishop) are firm favourites with the viewers." Fans of the show will no doubt have stay tuned to the red tops to find out how this backstage plot unfurls.
