Manchester’s Xfm has kicked off a search to find the best school bands from in and around the city.
School rocks!
The ‘Rock School’ competition, now in its fourth year, launched on Monday and challenges students to play a cover version of a song on the current Xfm playlist and upload it to a special micro-site.
Listeners then get to vote on the best songs and pick the winning group, who in turn get the chance to open Xfm Manchester’s Winter Wonderland gig at The Apollo.
Which is probably more fun than doing their homework.
Xfm presenter, and former Inspiral Carpet man, Clint Boon, said of the competition: “This is something that I have been really excited about after the success of last year. I can’t wait to see what secret prodigies are hidden out there in schools all over the North West.”
Last year’s winners from the Manchester station (the competition actually runs nationwide through all Xfm operations) were Warrington boys – literally, they were 13 at the time - Billion Babies. Apparently they wooed their public with a cover version of the seminal AC/DC classic ‘Back in Black’.
Bands have until 5pm on 28th November to upload their songs at www.xfmmanchester.co.uk/rockschool. In conjunction with the opportunity to perform at the gig there’s also £1,000 worth of Yamaha music equipment up for grabs for the winning schools.
