The region’s sporting prowess goes well beyond the field as most observers know. Not only is Liverpool digital agency Rippleffect in the middle of a three year contract with Arsenal FC to develop and manage its website, but this week the club also launched its official iPhone app which was developed by Manchester mobile specialist 2Ergo.
The launch signals further development in the increasingly rapid pace of digital uptake by the Premier League teams in particular.
Everton FC already boasts the largest Bluetooth set-up in Europe while the size of some of the clubs’ TV stations – LFC TV and MUTV spring to mind with over 20 staff in each operation – suggests that our football clubs are grasping the commercial opportunities faster than most, as their output increasingly embraces broadband and cable, digital and satellite.
Earlier this year, MCFC awarded a contract to Endemol Sport, a subsidiary of the TV production company behind Big Brother, as the club seeks to attain international acclaim and clout sooner rather than in due course, while MUFC, with its clutch of overseas language websites, has an active and enthusiastic digital proponent for several years.
The urgency driving the clubs as they push further into new areas in their search for new commercial opportunities is likely to result in further friction between officialdom in its various guises and the individual clubs’ own commercial objectives.
