The Big Chip Awards, the North West’s annual awards for digital excellence, will this Thursday become the first ever awards ceremony to be shown live in the online virtual world Second Life.
The occasion will also see the launch of Second Life Manchester – a virtual recreation of the city.
The awards ceremony will be streamed live from the evening’s proceedings at the New Century Hall in Manchester and will be available to Second Life’s estimated 6.5m users worldwide.
The compere of the awards, broadcaster Tony Wilson, will be digitally recreated as the host online.
Second Life Manchester has been created by the Urbis Centre and Clicks and Links, supported by the MDDA. Clicks and Links has produced the design for Second Life Manchester.
The 2007 Awards has attracted the highest number of entries since the Awards were launched in 1998. Over 100 companies have submitted over 200 entries.
Shaun Fensom, chair of Manchester Digital said: “As one of the first celebrations of new media and ICT talent in the UK, and by far the biggest outside London, the Big Chip Awards is all about showcasing high quality and pioneering work produced by the region’s digital industry. So it is fitting that the awards should kick off the cutting edge Second Life Manchester and be the very first awards shown live in the Second Life virtual world. As far as we know this is a world first.”
