Bill Daring chairman of KMP Digitata dies | Print |  Email to a friend

Bill Daring, one of the region’s best known and liked marketers has died. His career in Manchester spanned almost 30 years, initially in advertising and latterly in digital marketing services. Bill Daring, one of the region’s best known and liked marketers has died. His career in Manchester spanned almost 30 years, initially in advertising and latterly in digital marketing services. In respect of the latter, he was widely acknowledged by his peers and clients to be one of the North West’s digital pioneers.

Daring came to prominence in the 1980s with Burgess Daring Associates which for a long period during the 80s was the most successful agency in the region specialising in IT B2B advertising.

The agency subsequently split up when he and Tom Burgess went their own ways: Burgess moving south to focus on IT PR while Daring established KMP in 1991.

KMP with around 20 staff has consistently been at the forefront of digital marketing activities since its inception. The agency’s roster of clients includes Manchester Airport, ASDA, Barclaycard, British Gas, Chester Zoo, Dept of Work & Pensions, Makro, Open University, Punch Taverns, Renold, Royal Liver, Shop Direct Group and SSL.

Jon Keefe, KMP’s managing director and Daring’s son Gerard have effectively been running the company over the past few months.

KMP Statement - 1 January 2010

On Sunday morning 27 December, in peace and surrounded by his family, a pillar of the North West digital sector and one of KMP Digitata’s founders Bill Daring passed away after a short period of illness.

Bill, who retired from KMP Digitata earlier in the year, will be remembered for his significant contributions to the Manchester advertising industry during the 80’s and the North West Digital sector from 1993 onwards, right up until earlier this year when illness finally restricted him to his beloved farm in Hazel Grove.

Bill played a wider role in the regional digital arena. He contributed to Skillset and other NWDA ventures in the digital space and lectured at both Salford and MMU. He was also a great supporter of local businesses in Stockport and advocated bringing on talent from the local colleges and universities.

Following Bill’s retirement as Chairman, Jon Keefe another of KMP Digitata’s founders became CEO while Rhodri Edwards Client Services Director and Gez Daring Bill’s eldest son and Client Services Manager were both promoted to the Board of KMP Digitata. In true KMP style Bill and Jon had ensured the next generation of management had been groomed to step up to the plate. KMP Digitata completed another successful year in the challenging economic conditions and the Company has had a successful first quarter with significant new business wins in the form of clients ClearDebt and Trek America part of TUI Group plc.

Jon Keefe KMP Digitata’s CEO commented: “I will miss him as a business partner, a sparring partner and dear friend. KMP Digitata will go on from strength to strength benefiting from Bill’s skills that he passed on. But right now our thoughts are with Gez, Alan, and Alison and the rest of Bill’s family.”

Funeral arrangements

The funeral will take place on Monday 11 January.

The Service of Remembrance will be at 2.45pm at St. Thomas’s Church in High Lane. All are welcome. Following the service there will be a reception at The Red Lion from 4pm.

The family ask that you don’t send flowers; tributes to Bill in the form of donations to the Arthritis Research Campaign (ARC) or Cancer Research UK would be greatly appreciated.

You leave a great many friends Bill.
 2 By Gez O'Brien - Stardotstar, on 27-12-2009 16:31
Really sorry to hear it. He's left a great company and a top man at the helm.
 3 By Steve Downes, on 27-12-2009 17:27
Firstly, my thoughts go out to Gez, Alan, Alison and Jean. And you too Jon.
Bill was a one-off. He defined the phrase alpha male. There are hundreds of people enjoying Christmas now in houses paid for with mortgages earned at Bill’s businesses. And many agencies spawned by people inspired by him.
One personal story defines Bill for me. Many years ago, when working for Bill, my wife had a miscarriage and was being kept in hospital overnight. Out of the blue, Bill turned up at my flat and said “come on, you’re not staying here tonight, we’ll have a curry then you can kip at mine”. So we did and destroyed several bottles into the small hours. He dropped me off at the hospital the next morning. I took my wife home, made her comfortable then, with her mum there, popped into the Royal Exchange office. Bill called me into his office, enquired after my wife, then gave me an almighty bollocking because the billings of my account group were down that month and I’d better buck up or else! That was the man.
I wouldn’t have had my career without his mentoring. His professional legacy is a thriving company run by fine people. But Jon, Gez – you’d better look after it because if there’s a way of delivering a bollocking from up there Bill will find it.
Rest in peace mate.

I met Bill when I was doing the CAM course at the very start of my career and remember him as the kind of warm and supportive influence that you need when you are first finding your way. My sympathies to his family and colleagues.
 5 By Michael Welch's alter ego, on 01-01-2010 20:14
sadly this effectively means the two clowns at a certain RDA who should have lost their jobs for their stunning incompetence over my (M Welch) fraudulent doings will now almost certainly get away with it for life. I hope Bill wherever he now lays doesn't look back at their continuing successful anonymity with any undue regret. His frustration at being unable to publicly expose them was immense.

As Steve said, rest in peace Bill.

I only really got to know Bill over the last two years but in the time it is obvious that he was a dynamo for the digital industry. His passion was infectious, and his love for business inspired me to be a better Director. He will bew missed by myself and many, many people all around me. Its a sad day for the Northwest Digital Community as it has lost one of its pillars.
 7 By Sandy LIndsay, on 27-12-2009 20:45
I agree completely Steve. Bill (helped) set up far more than he's given credit for. When I first started Tangerine, he couldn't have been more helpful and supportive and I'll always be grateful for this. The North West creative community was enhanced for Bill's being part of it and will be deminished by his passing. RIP Bill - you were a true mate. Our thoughts are with Jon and his team x

So sad to hear this news, Bill always had time to chat and connected so many people. He will be missed.
9 By Paul Fabretti website, on 27-12-2009 21:00
I wouldn't be where I am now, doing what I am doing now had I not had the fortune to have worked with Bill - he took a chance on me 3 years ago and I haven't looked back since.

As Steve said, Bill had a certain "style" about him, but did so only because he cared so passionately!! He was a hugely talented, knowledgeable and inspirational man and will be sadly missed by many, many people.

Very sad news - Bill has always been such an evangelist of everything digital - I first met Bill in the late 90s and spent a week with him on a digital trade mission to India. His enthusiasm and passion for what he did inspired everyone around him. My condolences to his family and colleagues,
11 By Stuart Bruce website, on 28-12-2009 10:42
I only had the privilege of meeting Bill a couple of times, but it wasn't hard to tell that he was a true pioneer. The North West marketing industry will be poorer without him.
 12 By Simon Rowe, on 28-12-2009 18:23
I had the honor of working with Bill at KMP for almost ten years, and can unequivocably state that I, like so many others who knew him, would not be the person I am today without his tutelage, even if it came in the form of a royal bollocking more often than not.

His infectious passion for the digital medium is what convinced me I had chosen the right career, and more importantly the right company to dedicate it to.

Bill, I owe you so much and probably never told you just what you meant to me. I only hope that your new colleagues have those management accounts ready in time or they won't know what has hit them. Give them hell my friend.
13 By Simon Wharton website, on 28-12-2009 20:44
I knew he was ill, just not how ill. Every time I met him I came away a little wiser.Everybody who is anybody in our industry knew him, and almost uniquely for our sector, I don't recall a bad word said about him.
I hope that we gather to raise a toast to him in the near future
14 By John McNicholas website, on 29-12-2009 07:25
I have played rugby, worked for, worked with and know Bill and family for almost 30 years. After mentoring me most of this time I work in NYC as a marketing director for a Fortune 500 corporation. No one I have met in all of this time has been as well balanced and brilliant as Bill. He leaves a hole in our lives that cannot be filled. I was lucky to know him. Our thoughts are with his family.
 15 By Pete, on 29-12-2009 11:29
A bad, bad day. Ran a great company, did great stuff, influenced piles of people, kick-started a hundred careers or more but always ready to ask the tough questions and crap detect with real ingenuity.
16 By Mark Garner website, on 29-12-2009 19:30
Blimey Bill, you were my first competitor in the dot com space in 1996 - ish? I had no idea you were poorly. You were a gentleman who always bought his round and a wily old fox to boot. We should have done that pint you talked about last time we shook hands. God bless you. This lot think social media is the future, then again Bill I remember you and I on a platform shaking our heads at the people telling us that Netscape and AOL would own the world in ten years time. I will miss you.
 17 By Anthony Taylor, on 29-12-2009 19:31
I very sad to hear this. I only met Bill a couple of years ago but instantly liked him. I always found to him to be incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. I was impressed by the work KMP did for me while at Shop Direct. My sympathies to his family and no doubt many friends.
 18 By Mike Ryan, on 31-12-2009 09:09
So sorry to hear this. A sad loss to KMP and a big loss to the local digital sector. My thoughts go out to Gerrard, Bill's family and Jon Keefe. This is the end of an era and Bill was one of those irrepressable personalities that help create the digital sector in the North West. I will - like so many others on - here miss him and the contribution he's made to Manchester.
 19 By David Wolstenholme, on 31-12-2009 17:35
Mad as your hat and smarter than the average bear. Cheers Bill, the owrld's a duller place without you.
20 By Manoj Ranaweera website, on 31-12-2009 18:42
Shocked to hear Bill has passed away! I was not aware of his illness. I did not know him personally, but have met him couple of times in the past. Big Chip Awards may have been the last time I met him, where he spoke about the next phase of growth. He was a very likeable chap and very well connected within the north west digital sector.

Gez, on behalf of Northern StartUp 2.0 community, please accept our deepest sympathies for your loss!

Bill will be sadly missed by many in our industry. I've known and worked with him over more years than I care to remember now. He was always pleasant, sometimes a challenge, but his contribution to our world will last for ever.
 22 By Ann Hunt, on 01-01-2010 20:19
Sadly the clown at the RDA referred to above is now a director. But thnakfully Bill wasn't one to let things lie - his spirit will out the charlatan who remains outrageously in a job which in the private sector he would have been sacked from long ago.
 23 By Sean Barton, on 02-01-2010 08:30
Unlike so many people, Bill only came into my life a few years ago when I joined KMP. Like everyone I fond Bill to be a unique individual who had a passion for life and business. On several occasions when considering options I have found myself asking the question “what would Bill do?” Although he is no longer physically with us his sprit still provides inspiration.
24 By Rob Brown website, on 04-01-2010 10:29
Like Nigel S., I first met Bill when he was a lecturer on the CAM course at what is now MMU. He was a genuinely inspiring individual. We met several times over the last couple of years to discuss innovations in the digital sector and although we never managed to work together we did manage a convivial lunch last year for which I am grateful. I admired Bill. I'm really sorry he's gone.
 25 By Gwyn Williams, on 04-01-2010 12:47
Met Bill twice, and as has has been said above, came away wiser and inspired both times. My condolances to his family and friends, regretting that I didn't meet him earlier and more often.
26 By Gill Nuttall and Debra Kirwan, on 04-01-2010 13:38
Bill was a lovely, lovely man. His calls to our switchboard used to always brighten our day and we'd often tell Smally that Bill was much better looking than him, just to annoy David. Rest in peace Bill.
 27 By David Edmundson-Bird, on 04-01-2010 15:03
What a great loss to us all and a sad day for friends and family. Bill was a great guy who inspired my students at MMU to go that bit further. Never one to beat about the bush, they loved to hear how it really was out there! A much admired man that I enjoyed talking with and learning from, he will be terribly missed.
28 By Susan Wilson nee King, on 04-01-2010 18:07
Very sorry to hear about Bill's death. I also attended the Gilberd School, Colchester at the same time. Bill was instrumental in arranging two enjoyable and successful reunions in 2002 & 2004 and will be sadly missed by his old school friends.

Ironically some of us had just been talking about another get together.
 29 By Jim Rothnie, on 05-01-2010 13:54
I first encountered Bill in the dot com madness of the late 1990s. A remarkable individual with a unique take on life: Energetic, passionate, knowlegable and great fun. He will be sadly missed by the entire marketing community in the region and I guess this is reflected in the many tributes already paid.
 30 By Dave Carter, on 07-01-2010 13:15
Bill was one of the great pioneers and a great guy too. I've only just heard and am really shocked. We also worked together and sparred together throughout the early days as well as the more recent ones. My thoughts go out to Bill's family. He will be much missed. Dave.
 31 By Nicky Wake, on 08-01-2010 10:49
Such sad news, so sorry to hear this and I had no idea Bill was ill, he'd spoken at a few of my events over the last few years and was always incredibly entertaining, highly informative and great to work with - he will be missed. My thoughts are with his family and the KMP team.
 32 By David Holmes, on 09-01-2010 15:43
A sad day - Bill led by example and from the front, and always with humour and great commitment. His life was a true reflection of the old Burgess Daring Yellow Pages ad "Don't chose an agency the colour of this page". My thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues and the fortunate alumni of Bill's many enterprises.
 33 By GaryM, on 12-01-2010 20:49
Bill will be missed greatly

Deepest belated sympathies
 34 By Tony Foggett, on 15-01-2010 16:27
Apologies for the belated message.

Some wonderful tributes and stories about a man who really was a pioneer of the digital scene here in the N.West. I know of countless individuals who's talents and opportunities started at KMP.

For our part, KMP is one of the few established agencies that was around when Louis, Wini and myself set up Code. Bill's legacy will be in the lives he influenced but also in the fact that he leaves behind company with the stability and potential to carry on without him. KMP will continue to have a lasting and growing impact on the region which will ensure he is not forgotten.

Our deepest sympathies and love go out to Bill's family and all those at KMP

Tony, Wini, Louis and everyone at Code.
