British Council looks to spend up to £1.5m online as it searches for 'exceptional' digital agencies | Print |  Email to a friend

The Manchester-headquartered British Council has unveiled a budget of up to £1.5m as it looks to engage “an exceptional supplier, or suppliers” to help it with the online marketing of UK education to overseas audiences.

In an ambitious new initiative the Council is embarking on an endeavour with Education UK to provide an “inspirational” student-facing online guide to study opportunities in Britain.

This “extensive project”, as the Council has termed it, has a world-wide target audience.

Opportunities in Manchester
To achieve its objectives the publicly funded body has set aside a purse of between £800,000 and £1.5m, splitting its requirements into three lots, each subject to a two-year agreement.

Firstly the Council has a budget of £500,000 to £800,000 for ‘web development, hosting and management’.

This huge lot spans web design, hosting, SEO services, content provision, “interactive features that will engage the target audiences” and further requirements such as “day to day website housekeeping.”

A second £350,000 to £700,000 lot covers data collection and database management.

As expected, given the scope of the project, this in itself is a major task, encompassing gathering data regarding prospective students, as well as educational facilities and courses.

The final lot does not have a budget, as it is dependent on the business model proposed by the competing suppliers. It concerns the online advertising sales contract for the site, as the Council looks to generate revenue to cover its running costs.

A full range of sales management services is expected from the successful supplier, with the organisation looking to make the most out of ad opportunities in both the national and international market.

Given the mammoth size of the tasks (not to mention the potential audience of the new online channel) the Council is encouraging bids from “suppliers who can demonstrate an ability to work as part of a wider team to achieve a common goal” or from various consortia.

How-Doers that are interested can find out more via email or through the body’s main web site.

Applications are invited by 7 January.

Good luck!
