Clipstar, a website which runs online talent shows and whose operations are split between Manchester and Santa Barbara, has said it is on track to offer a bumper $1m prize at its New Year’s Eve draw this year.
The company, which claims private equity backing, runs its sales and marketing operations internationally from Manchester where its co-founder Erin Ozgar is based.
Clipstar is one of a new breed of websites which are known as ‘financially competitive clip communities’ or FC3 for short. They claim to be at the heart of a new and growing movement towards online talent competitions.
Ozgar explained that the "Difference between a social networking site and a financially competitive clip community site is that posting and exchanges of clips have grown out of the chat sites, while a site like ours is tailor-made to host and promote clip-based talent, and also to provide financial reward. It is purpose-made to showcase talent, and then introduce the best to talent agents who can genuinely progress their careers.”
Clipstar started trading last year and now employs ten staff in Manchester.
The company’s key proposition is its ‘online X-Factor style’ contest which awards $90,000 every quarter.
There are nine categories but no panel of judges – the public votes and decides the winners from the subscribers and ‘wannabe stars’ who upload their video clips.
The company faces stiff competition to market its proposition from Google’s increasing range of products including YouTube and from sites such as MySpace.
