Manchester-based Drumbeat Creative has crafted a flash game that aims to create awareness of a new scheme from the Co-Operative Group and help tackle problems like childhood obesity and rising CO2 emissions.
For such lofty aims the game comes with a simple premise – collect kids from their houses and get them to school on time.
The project has been conceived to raise the profile of The Co-operative Group's Walking Bus initiative.
This encourages children to walk to school together, in the company of two adult volunteers, along planned routes – hence becoming a ‘walking bus.’
The game picks up this idea, and the kids, by challenging players to collect the bus passengers on time. Fail to do this and they get a lift to school, pumping up CO2 emissions.
If the emissions rise too high it’s game over.
A sneak peak at the Flash new game
The game has been designed to appeal to all age groups… but we’re afraid all age groups will have to wait to play it, as it’s not online at www.co-operative.coop until the end of October.
Jon Black from Drumbeat told us that it was “a great little game” and also “a powerful tool in the communication of a serious message.”
Paul Monaghan, head of sustainability and social goals at The Co-operative, added: “The Co-operative already has successful environmental programmes up and running for schools in connection with renewable energy, recycling and food provenance.
“We are now taking on transport, probably our most difficult challenge yet.
“The great thing with Walking Buses is that they not only help tackle the greatest environmental challenge we face – climate change – but also one of the great public health crises of our time – obesity.”
Drumbeat has worked with the Co-op on projects across the last six years.
