Corporation Pop to develop Second Life presence for Manchester Business School | Print |  Email to a friend
Thursday, 20 March 2008
Design and new media agency Corporation Pop has been commissioned to develop a Second Life island for Manchester Business School.

The team has only just collected the brief, but did take time out to reveal to How-Do some of the details behind the project.

Design and new media agency Corporation Pop has been commissioned to develop a Second Life island for Manchester Business School.
Richard Hawley's house
Apparently the ‘island’ is set to take the form of a virtual campus and will be developed primarily as a learning, teaching and recruitment tool.

The Linden Lab’s location will allow MBS to reach out to a broader worldwide audience, showcasing the school’s departments and facilities – albeit virtually – on a global basis.

Development has begun immediately and Dom Raban, MD at Corporation Pop, said that he was expecting the first stages to be completed in the time frame of the next couple of months. The site is expected to grow organically from there on in.

Raban told How-Do: “Universities and other academic institutions are beginning to realise the enormous potential that virtual worlds offer.

“They provide access to information in a rich environment, in a way that would not be possible through the web or print.

“Recent estimates put the number of universities with a virtual presence at over 400.

“We are establishing a real strength in this field and this win follows hot on the heels of our work in Second Life for Richard Hawley."

A virtual star
This latter project was hailed by the Guardian as having “humour, warmth and ability to hold your interest that's decidedly rare in Second Life,” and centred on rebuilding the Mercury nominated artist’s terraced house in the virtual world.

The agency even managed to bring Hawley eerily to life by using Uclan's Biomechanics Testing Facility in Preston to motion capture his everyday actions such as walking, smoking, drinking, and playing guitar.

In other news at Corporation Pop, the team has also produced a new website for recently launched AV postproduction firm Candy Studios and a nine minute showreel for Manchester-based fashion brand Bench.
