Former travel industry PR man Shaun Robinson believes it’s more fun telling the 'unvarnished' truth about travel destinations.
Robinson, whose previous employers have included Airtours and other leading travel companies, is now head of media relations at United Utilities. He has also just set up a watchdog style holiday website www.holidayinsiders.com to reveal what he believes the travel companies and agents really don’t want us to know.
Robinson The site went live on 15 February.
In addition to ‘inside’ info, the site also includes special offers, reviews and information on ‘hidden gems’ around the globe. It carries the strapline “hard hitting, straight talking.” Robinson said: “ I’ve done this because I was becoming frustrated at the number of companies that were being swallowed up by big travel conglomerates which then push their products and services with a great deal of advertising and marketing firepower.
“There need to be more independent voices out there telling customers exactly what to expect.
“The site is not making money right now but not losing money either. I believe it could become financially very successful through affiliates.
"People seem to love describing their holiday experiences and the information can be invaluable."How Robinson would have reacted when still at Airtours to such feedback is, however, another story.
He also claims not to be perturbed by the increasing trend for companies to sue critics and ‘hostile’ reviewers.
