Guardian's n0tice launches beta version

The Guardian Media Group's new community noticeboard site n0tice is gearing up with the launch of a beta version.

People who have shown an interest in the site - How-Do included - have been invited to try it out.

N0tice is designed to give users information, news and classified ads relevant to their location.

One of the people involved in the project has been Manchester-based Sarah Hartley who led the Guardian Local web project which was closed down by the group over the summer.

N0tice appears to be an attempt to take that idea forward in a post-Twitter environment. Information is streamed in the same way as Twitter and users are encouraged to contribute what they've "n0ticed" going on.

GMG's director of digital strategy Matt McAllister posted a blog about the site in May in which he explained its background and how it saw it sitting within the Guardian group.

He said he hoped it could become a new GMG business that supports the Guardian.

"The support n0tice provides should come in two forms: new approaches to open and collaborative journalism and new revenue streams.

"It’s also very useful to have living projects that demonstrate the most extreme examples of ‘Open and Connected' models.  We need to be exploring things outside our core business that may point to the future in addition to moving our core efforts where we want to go."

He added: "We spend a lot of time thinking about openness and collaboration and the live web at the Guardian. If n0tice does nothing more than illustrate what the future might look like then it will be very helpful indeed."
