HMV has tasked Code Computerlove to design and implement its consumer website in Canada. Although HMV Canada has national coverage in terms of stores, it did not previously have its own web site but channelled online sales through www.amazon.ca.
The new project was awarded to Manchester digital agency Code following earlier work Code had carried out for HMV in the UK and Ireland together with separate work for Waterstones, which is part of the HMV Group. Code did not pitch against other digital agencies for the work.
Code launched HMV’s new web site in March 2006 and the company states that online sales have increased by 300% since relaunch.
The objective of the site - www.hmv.ca - is to try to offer Canada a branded shopping experience similar to when visiting an actual HMV store.
Dave Marien, vice president of IT at HMV, said: "Code's knowledge of the HMV group enabled them to react with agility as well as deliver a cost effective solution for Canada. Plus they turned the project around in just four months so we can start reaping the increased revenue very quickly.
"Such strong online results in the UK highlighted the need to embrace e-commerce in our other markets as quickly as possible."
Code account manager, James Barley said: "The new site focuses on HMV's existing brand strengths and its Canadian differentials. The site focuses on simplifying the user journey and ease of purchase, using HMV UK site learning's which have resulted in massive increases in customer conversion. The site also follows online global brand guidelines previously set out by Code."
