An interactive crime drama produced by Manchester’s Bellyfeel has got internet power players scratching their heads and whispering ‘whodunnit,’ after receiving a nomination for a globally coveted Webby Award.
The Webby’s are generally regarded as the ‘Oscars of the internet’ (The New York Times says so, so it must be true) and, understandably, the competition for gongs is concomitantly fierce.
This year, the Webby’s 12th, there were 10,000 entries from over 60 countries competing in the available categories.
Crimeface has risen above its peers to receive a nomination in the ‘best experimental video website’ stakes, and will now compete against National Geographic and MTV, amongst others, in the fight to secure the gong.
Belly what?
Observers have noted that this is a stunning achievement for tiny independent firm Bellyfeel Ltd, with Webbys’ executive director David-Michael Davies opining that it is “a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators."
Krishna Stott, who set the firm up alongside Andrew Lim and Richard Davis, is delighted with the nomination and said: “Crimeface was produced in Manchester over several years on the tiniest of budgets, yet we were constantly driven by the big idea that we could blow people away with our work.”
In that respect it appears to be a case of mission accomplished.
The awards will be announced on 6 May, with a ceremony to honour the winners following in New York on 6 June.
