iPhone workshop at Lancaster University sees first app go live

An application development workshop held at Lancaster University by MJR Web has seen its first programme hit the App Store.

The course in June was aimed at developers and businesses, with the goal of building an app in a day.

iPhone workshop at Lancaster University sees first app go liveNow, slightly more than a day later, Apple has approved the first application, called Voice Your View.

The free download has been designed so that local people can pass comment on any public space where they are. So, whether that's about litter in the street, poor lighting or a recommendation.

It was built by Will Simm, a researcher at the university’s department of computing and feeds into a larger Voice Your View scheme, a cross-disciplinary research project involving 5 universities.

The aim is to develop technology to allow people to express their perceptions of safety in public spaces wherever and whenever they want. The iPhone app will allow users to do this spontaneously and comments are then passed on to other users, local community groups and local authorities.

The app also allows users to share photos of the area they’re commenting on.
