Lateral Visions to launch 'revolutionary' technology to make the web 3D today | Print |  Email to a friend

Liverpool’s Lateral Visions is hoping to create shockwaves across the virtual world today, as it officially unveils a suite of technology that can apparently turn the world wide web into a three-dimensional domain.
A whole new dimension
Industry representatives and trade journalists will gather at the International Centre for Digital Content (ICDC) at 3pm to get a glimpse of the software, and to hear Phil Redmond opine about its potential uses.

Details were limited at the time of writing, but a pre-press briefing from the firm gave a window into what can be expected from the development.

It noted: “Lateral Visions' 3D web technology enables connected, interactive 3D content across the Web.

“Websites can now be more visual, more interactive and with richer content.

“Browsing the Web will mean navigating high-quality real-time 3D websites and worlds, as well as viewing 'traditional' two-dimensional (2D) pages.”

The firm’s MD Dr Carl Gavin added: "Existing uses for the internet, such as communications, retail, media, education, marketing, social networking and games will be transformed, while whole new application areas will open up.

“The experience of using the web will be transformed for users, businesses and web developers alike.”

What a load of hype, these guys are a little late to the party. I had to look at the date of this article to make sure I was not caught in a time warp. There are a number of companies doing this and a lot more, for example: http://www.pelicancrossing.com with their Blink 3D product as well as their inovative inDuality product which allows you to teleport between Web based 3D environments created using technology from different companies.

Doesn't work on a mac either. Handy.

I disagree with Kent, I dont think he has grasped the details here.

The products he mentioned just allow you to download isolated 3D programs that can be rendered in a browser. They do not integrate with the Web & are more like games engines than any sort of 3D Web.

The inDuality, if it does what it claims will provide a connection between 3D technologies that are not intended to be connected, which makes me sceptical about its usability i.e. do you have to create logins and avatars for all these different technologies, then constantly have to login in to them as you move from one to the other! Eww!

I think the majority of companies out there have tried to jump on the bandwagon following the buzz that second life made. Second Life is a good virtual world chat program, but I dont think it was ever intended to be 'the 3D Web' as it goes completely in the wrong direction for that, for example do you think linden labs will host the entire internet on their servers? I dont think so! But thats the way second life works.

I think this technology is revolutionary, as it does away with all those preconceptions and deals with the fundamentals required to actually evolve a 3D Web (such as host 3D websites on any server anywhere, connect those website with hyperlinks in a truly seamless way and integrate with the Web and all its technologies, not try and replace it!

Then all your Virtual Worlds, casual games etc etc just become application that sit on the 3D Web.

This creates new, realistic opportunity for all existing industry's that do business on the web as they can continue to use all that technology infrastructure for e-commerce, security etc that they depend on, yet still take advantage of the richer presentation and immersive interaction that is possible with interactive 3D.

Anyone interested should take a look at their website as it explains a lot more than the above article.

Dave.
