Millionaire Laterooms founder Steve Walsh has shown an altruistic bent with the launch of his latest online portal www.isawthesea.com
Walsh - who set up Laterooms in 1999 with brothers Paul and Tony, before selling out to First Choice in a £110m deal in 2006 - has established what is thought to be an industry first with the new venture; a not-for-profit hotel booking site that uses its commission fees to pay for breaks for seriously ill children, those with disabilities and individuals living in poverty.

Working as an aggregator the portal compares prices from sites such as laterooms.com, booking.com and hotels.com and then, when a booking has been made, donates 'virtually all' of the commission to fund hotel accommodation for the needy.

Walsh came up with the idea after being inspired by an act of generosity from his brother Paul, who organised and paid for a group of 17 Romanian orphans to visit the Black Sea resort of Mamaia.

He explained in a statement: "The Romanian children had never seen the sea, in fact the adult carers who travelled with them had also never seen the sea - and instead of staying in the hotel Paul had paid for; they stayed on the beach all day and night.

"This had such a strong effect on me that I wanted to launch a website that utilised my expertise in e-commerce for a worthwhile cause that really does make a difference to peoples lives.

Walsh continued: "isawthesea.com will be the first of a number of initiatives I am planning to make use of the incredible commercial power of the internet and use it for worthy causes.

"Not-for-profit websites such as isawthesea.com are all about identifying a service that is useful to consumers which benefits those in need, without any additional cost to the consumer."

Walsh and his brother are getting the commission fund rolling with a donation of £50,000 and have partnered with charities such as The Family Holiday Association, Dream-A-Way, Break, Bolton Lads and Girls Club and The Youth Cancer Trust.
