Liverpool hosts new media unconference | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 05 December 2008
Barcamp Liverpool which takes place this weekend is being promoted as one of the biggest new media gatherings ever seen in Britain.

The technology “unconference” is described as such because it’s open to all and quite informal.

Liverpool hosts new media unconference
So rather than meetings, speakers, delegates and diaries, people will turn up on Saturday morning and decide what happens then.

"The organisers provide the venue, some speedy wifi, and delicious food and refreshments; you provide the content!" so says the invite.

The idea was dreamed up in Silicon Valley in 2005 and since then a number have taken place around the world.

The website shows they’ve already got some major sponsors including Yahoo!, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft.

Barcamp Liverpool is being held on Saturday and Sunday, at the Novas Contemporary Urban Centre, in Greenland Street.

Why is it called Barcamp? Well apparently it originates from the word "foobar" which is hacker slang.

i wonder if this was as pointless as it sounded
anyone go?

I went it (and have been too many) it was far from pointless and much more worthwhile than conferences you pay an arm and a leg for. You have to go to a barcamp to understand them, they\'re quite unlike other conferences.

Anyway don\'t take my word for it, it was the second trending word on Twitter during the weekend and people seemed to enjoy it

Yes, 120 leading technologists, entrepreneurs, investors, bloggers, and designers, from across the UK went.

They created over 35 sessions on ultra new ideas & projects, pitched their startups and did business. (I don't think any of them found it pointless!)

You can read some of what they thought on Twitter: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23bcliverpool
