Two staffers from web agency Mando Group have developed a new game that allows users to drive a virtual car around any city in the world using the popular Google Maps application.
Developer Sam Birch and senior designer Jim Savage came up with the concept for the game six months ago and eventually released it onto the web last month.
Despite, graphically at least, having more in common with a ZX81 game than the latest generation of console software, the pair’s Google Drive has stoked significant online buzz and as a result was recently covered by the Wall Street Journal.
The idea, as Birch explained, is simple - it’s “to have a bit of fun.”

A fan of the mapping application, Birch decided to take it an evolutionary step further to explore the possibility of driving a little yellow car around the streets of any city in the world.
Although still at an early stage in development, he and Savage succeeded in creating a curiously addictive driving game and are now working on eliminating problems with the smoothness of the vehicle’s progress and the ‘collision detection’, which frequently occurs when the car veers off course.
Birch has now revealed that the next step is to develop the game so that players can choose their cars, race against their friends or try to beat the clock as they take on pre-defined city routes.
Mando, which has created numerous driving games for its clientele, is happy to support the pair on their mission to burn virtual rubber around the world.
