The Webbys, the US awards celebrating ‘excellence in the digital arts’ are sometimes viewed as the digital equivalent Stateside of the Oscars. www.manutd.com was voted ‘best sports website’.
There were few non US winners on the evening but the BBC and the Guardian did the the UK proud with several nominations each. Mark Hargreaves, general manager of Manchester United Interactive, must have found himself in unusual surroundings when he joined David Bowie, the Beastie Boys and eBay president Meg Whitman at the awards ceremony in New York last week.
"We're absolutely delighted to have won a Webby" he said at the post awards press conference.
"It's a real coup for all the parties involved including the staff at Manchester United Interactive, the designers Lightmaker, the content providers Haymarket and IMG which provides the technical support. It means a lot to us to know the website is appreciated by our supporters around the world.
"With your support and feedback, we'll be looking to build on this success and make the website even better during the next 12 months."
The Webby winners were asked to restrict their acceptance speech to just five words at the ceremony. Following a pre recorded video message from Sir Alex Ferguson, Hargreaves offered the primarily American audience his five words "he gave you David Beckham."
Separately at the awards, in the best visual design category, Manchester agency magneticNorth was a nominee for its client Diesel- submit yourself site
