It looks like the Michael Welch saga, which was expected to reach its long-awaited denouement on Friday at Warrington Crown Court, is set to run on for yet another chapter.
Welch, one time head of the Digital Industries North West (DINW) initiative, failed to turn up for sentencing on Friday after earlier pleading guilty to two charges of ‘obtaining money transferred by deception’ and ‘theft’. The charges related to some £440,000 of public money that disappeared during his tenure at the NWDA-backed DINW. Who (and where) is the real Welch? When How-Do contacted the court on Friday afternoon to find out how he would be brought to bear for his crimes, we were informed by a clerk that he “didn’t turn up for sentencing.”The clerk then informed us: “My understanding is that a warrant will now be issued for his arrest.” It marks yet another twist in a story that has been laced with intrigue, shrouded in mystery and, seemingly, embellished with the occasional porky when it comes to Mr Welch’s past conquests in the business arena. Welch, elusive at the best of times, has now apparently disappeared. Hence the story – first broken by How-Do back in September last year – rumbles on, much to the annoyance, no doubt, of those who originally employed him who had wished to draw this whole unpleasant matter to a close.
