Moonfish, one of the region’s web pioneers has gone into liquidation. It is not clear as to the future position of the operation which has offices in Manchester and London and employed over 30 staff.

The agency’s managing director Roberto Simi and his colleagues could not be contacted by How-Do as phones at the agency were not being answered.

People with contacts at the agency said staff were advised to go home on Monday evening.

The news has surprised the digital and marketing community as the rumours which tend to precede such news were not widespread.

Moonfish was co-founded in 1994 by the company’s chairman and creative director Kate Drewett. Drewett’s earlier career had been spent creating multimedia programmes for clients in education, training and entertainment.

In the past few years, as Moonfish became more of an ‘establishment’ digital agency, Drewett has made another name for herself with business development bodies such as Manchester Knowledge capital where she is a board member and chairman of the Manchester City Growth Initiative.

Managing director Roberto Simi was also one of the original founders and was appointed MD in 2004.

The agency’s client list was impressive and included Cisco, Opal Telecom/Carphone Warehouse, Swinton Insurance, Thus, English Partnerships and Fujitsu.

Tony Foggett of Code, another of the region’s leading digital agencies said he was really sorry to hear the news: “When we set up Code, Moonfish were our local heroes. The region needs big digital agencies and this is a big shame for all concerned.”

That's a real shame. Moonfish were 'the' pioneering digital agency in the North West and helped shape the entire sector here. Although they often seemed a bit aloof from the rest of the scene, without them there arguably wouldn't be such a strong regional industry now.
Best of luck to all the staff that have been affected by this.
