The Big Chip awards, the largest digital awards event in the UK regions, enjoyed a record number of entries and guests at the tenth anniversary event in Manchester last week.
Christian How-Do is the regional media partner of the Awards.
Over 200 entries were submitted this year and 500 guests cheered on the 20 plus winners of gongs. TV and radio presenter Terry Christian hosted the event which was fronted by the late Tony Wilson for several years. Not wishing to break from tradition, Christian ensured there was a steady stream of gentle abuse directed towards ‘metropolitan’ arrogance and detractors of MUFC. “Chelsea” he stated “Should stick to what they know best – flower shows.” The Neighbourhood - Grand Prix winners The Neighbourhood was the big winner on the night picking up three prizes including the Grand Prix Award (best overall).
Other winners included the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, EduNation, 3T Productions, Fudge. Trader Media Digital and LOVE.
Dave Carter of MDDA also chose to stick with tradition by ensuring he didn’t miss his annual opportunity for a ‘rant’. Paraphrasing Tony Wilson’s statement that the first industrial revolution saw the creation of canals and train lines established directly into centres of production, Carter compared connectivity speeds of 100 megs in the centre of Amsterdam with 1 meg in the region’s cities. To vociferous audience approval, he insisted it wasn’t good enough and announced a new trial initiative which he hoped would successfully address the issue.
Shaun Fensom Shaun Fensom of the Big Chips said: “This year’s winning entries have demonstrated the breadth and depth of talent that we have within the digital sector in the North West. To celebrate the tenth Big Chip we launched the International Innovation and Game of the North awards both of which attracted entries from outside the North West, showing that the Big Chips are now firmly on the digital map.”
In the coming weeks, How-Do will be featuring the individual categories, entrants and winners in greater depth.
