Three youth projects from across the North West have succeeded in collecting more than £85,000 from the Mediabox scheme, which is supported in the region by Northwest Vision and Media.
Last year some £600,000 was awarded throughout the UK to help 13 -19 year olds achieve their ambitions with a variety of media projects. This year has seen a healthy haul for the region with £38,698 going to Shelter in Merseyside, £34,945 heading to Onteca in Liverpool and £12,000 to Mid Pennine Arts.Shelter will be using the money to for its Home and Away project, which sees young people learning how to use mobile phones to make their own video diaries (voblogs), podcasts and other media, for sharing with other young people. Onteca is looking to develop a project called Creating Dimensions, where 50 young people from disadvantaged areas of Liverpool will work to create their own online multiplayer game and publish it on the web. Meanwhile Mid Pennine Arts is using its £12,000 to fund an initiative called Sub-plotting; a multi—media visual arts project to “encourage interaction amongst the ethnically diverse young people of Burnley.” Deborah Parker from NWVM said of the funding success: “We are second only to the East Midlands in the level of funding received and joint first in the number of projects funded.” Mediabox is a Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) initiative. www.visionandmedia.co.uk
