A team of University of Salford students has won a competition to work with the BBC on the redesign of their Bitesize educational website.
The members of the winning team will now qualify for a month’s placement within BBC Learning which is relocating to MediaCityUK in 2011.
The Salford team saw off competition from students at Manchester and Liverpool John Moores Universities. The new site will be launched in time for the next academic year beginning in September 2010.
It is estimated that around 75% of GSCE students use BBC Bitesize, one of the BBC’s earliest websites. However, it is planned to now overhaul the site and bring it more into line with contemporary social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace by building applications which can be shared, having profile pages and status updates and by personalising content to fit with each student’s interests.
Liza Booth from the BBC North team said: "BBC Learning has been grappling with a real issue and we are delighted that the Salford students were able to come up with some fresh ideas to genuinely help with the solution.
“We were really impressed with how they worked so well together - each bringing the skills of their different courses to come up with an impressive proposal. They were a talented group with a creative approach, who have the potential to get a job with the BBC when it moves to Salford Quays in 2011." Something to add?
