Interactive animation company T3D has created an interactive 3D model of Edinburgh Castle as part of the castle’s official new website.
The Bury company saw off competition form two other animation companies to secure the work.
T3D created a ‘photo-realistic model’ of the castle and its immediate surrounding area which allows staff and visitors to ‘fly around’ the building to familiarise themselves with its layout and attractions.
The technology employed to create the 1.5 sq km model enabled T3D to create what is claimed to be an accuracy of 10cms across the whole scene. Visitors are no longer forced to follow prescribed tours, instead they now have freedom to move around the castle at their will.
The castle also contains several military and regimental museums, all of which have been reproduced on the interactive model.
Linda Kong, eCommunications manager at Historic Scotland said: "The unique technology used by T3D has created a stunning effect. Balancing leading technology with engaging user experience was vital. The 3D model is central to the website, enhancing the visitor experience and giving a taster of the kind of 'wow' our visitors can expect from a world class attraction."
T3D, based in Summerseat near Bury, was established in early 2007. The company employs nine staff. The company specialises in the development of interactive web and offline based solutions involving models and movement within virtual environments.
Other clients of the company include BAA, Manchester city council, The Centre for Construction Innovation and Halton borough council.
