Trinity Mirror is rolling out a relaunch of its regional newspaper ‘companion’ sites following a nine month redevelopment programme. The first to appear are new versions of the Liverpool Daily Post and Liverpool Echo web sites.

Further sites will be relaunched in coming months with the company’s three North East followed by further sites in South Wales, North Wales and Scotland.

The redesigns, which have been overseen by Trinity Mirror’s digital design centre at Canary Wharf in London, will have a greater focus on breaking stories including more video and audio delivery and a greater focus on user generated content and reader blogs.

Trinity said that it has actively consulted with and engaged various interested parties throughout the nine month redevelopment programme. This collaboration has included external readers and web users testing both the existing and the new services together with internal operational teams drawn from advertising - regional and national teams - design, editors and local news and production teams.

Trinity has held a number of both week long courses and day courses to help its journalists come to terms with the increasing broadcast element of their jobs. More than 70 North West journos have taken part in the sessions to date.

David Black, Trinity’s director of regional digital media said:” We are now well on our way to achieving our goal of publishing the leading sites in our local markets, complementing the strength of our market-leading print titles.

“The significant upgrade to our sites will further improve our online proposition and gives us a tremendous platform to grow our online reach and revenues locally.”

Neil Benson, editorial director, regionals, added: "Our multimedia activity has come a long way in the past 12 months.

"But it is not just about redesigning our sites. Ensuring our journalists are up to speed with these developments is integral to our strategy, and this is why we have put in place a comprehensive multimedia training programme."
