Two thirds of workers think social networking sites should be banned | Print |  Email to a friend

A survey released by Ciao Surveys has revealed that, apparently, 66% of Britons think that social networks should be banned in workplace environments.

A survey released by Ciao Surveys has revealed that, apparently, 66% of Britons think that social networks should be banned in workplace environments.
Worth banning at work?
The survey studied the attitudes of 1000 respondents to the social networking phenomenon and came up with a host of interesting trends.

According to Ciao, 42% of 18 to 24-year-olds said that they would favour banishing the sites from work, a figure that rose to 79% for those aged 55 and older.

In addition to this 52% said that they access the sites more now than they did a year ago, with Scotland being the most popular geographical location for logging in - here 61.5% claimed to be a member of at least one social network.

In an interesting snapshot of exactly why people utilise the sites, it also appears that single people are the most likely to sign up to sites such as Facebook and MySpace, with 74% being a member of at least one.

In contrast to this only 47% of married people use social networks, with 67% of those living with a partner prodding, nudging and doing whatever else it takes to ramp up their compliment of 'friends.'

The survey was conducted throughout March this year.

I am assuming the social networks people had in mind when answer this survey were facebook, MySpace and the like and NOT the new wave of business focused services like WeCanDo.BIZ, LinkedIn or Xing. These definitely do have a useful work function.
