Web hosting firm UKFast has introduced eco-friendly server technology in a bid to help the environment and make the most of the SME market.
The Ecoservers that the Manchester-based business has developed are claimed to use less energy than standard equipment, generating less heat and thus reducing cooling and running costs. Savings that UKFast claims are passed on to the consumer.
In addition to the environmentally friendly angle, the Ecoservers are also more ‘scalable’ than their non-green counterparts. This means they can be used as a platform for SMEs to quickly and affordably increase the capabilities of their online presence as they grow.
Neil Lathwood, UKFast's IT director explained: "Ecoservers are much more scalable than shared hosting solutions and also much cheaper than standard dedicated server solutions.
“When the time comes for a business to upgrade its server hardware to a more powerful solution, information and applications can simply be ‘dragged and dropped’ onto the new platform."
He continued: "As competition online increases, shared hosting is becoming a dying breed.
"However, many businesses do not want to begin with a large dedicated server but require sophisticated technology to keep pace. Ecoservers bridge the gap and improve your carbon footprint."
The firm also claimed that data centres that host the internet currently use 0.08% of the world's energy.
By switching to green UPS technology UKFast says it is equivalent to switching off 14 3KW electric fires running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
UKFast is part of a consortium in Manchester including Ask:Goodman and with the support of Manchester city council, which is planning to build the world’s first large scale ‘green’ hosting facility and Internet hub.
