BBC and Kryten take down How-Do via Twitter
Drama and excitement today at How-Do and you missed it all.

Yes, unfortunately our servers are still smoking following a Twitter storm as thousands of Robert Llewellyn fans swooped on the website at the same time.

So while our loyal readers were getting a “server busy” error, we were tearing our hair out and contemplating the marketing power of 140 characters.

It all came from a late night news search, when our intrepid team of reporters discovered a potential story, while perusing the words of wisdom from our favourite Red Dwarf robot and Llewtube creator, Robert Llewellyn.

He’d got annoyed with BBC North West Tonight as they’d used one of his videos without permission and was Twittering his disappointment.

How-Do’s news senses tingled and we got in touch with the Beeb to find out more.

Having received a statement, we wrote a second story to say that the BBC had apologised.

Llewellyn: top twitterer
It was at this split second that How-Do had an inspired marketing idea:

Why not send a Tweet to Llewellyn with a link and tell him not to worry, we’d sorted it all out?

Well, seconds later, we realised why not.

He has around 26,000 followers on Twitter and rather a lot of them decided to visit How-Do at the same time.

The story got more than a 1000 hits in the first hour.

Then, sadly, we disappeared for a short while as our servers felt it was time for a lie down.

In true Aesop’s fables fashion there is a moral to this story: Twitter works rather well as a marketing tool, but it’s probably best to tell the technical folk before you press send.

Nice move! If you decide to do something like this again in the future, there are a few things you can do to make Joomla support surges in traffic better...

The easiest way to do this is if you create a static HTML version of the page, and upload it into the appropriate directory on the server (in this case /north-west-media-news/north-west-marketing-services/bbc-and-kryten-take-down-howdo-via-twitter-200906115590/ ) Doing this will ensure that there isn't an overload in DB queries... If you do this, you should be able to support having several thousand visitors without your server going down.

That's if you can predict the traffic surge arriving. If I predict a traffic surge on our site, does that mean we'll get thousands of hits? That would be lovely. Convert at 5%? Nice
