This is not the sort of bus you get barrelling back and to down Oxford Road laden with students, semi-comatose commuters and the detritus of discarded freesheets. Nope, this vehicle is a class above all of that.
Bentley gets the bus Welcome to the world's only London Routemaster bus that's rolled fresh off the line from luxury car manufacturer Bentley. The bus scored headlines regionally, nationally and internationally last week, after Bentley finished its unique restoration on behalf of St Luke’s Hospice in Cheshire. It took the car manufacturer's craftsman (59 of them in total) 2,000 hours to install hand stitched leather seats (replete with St Luke's and Bentley logos), a kitchen unit, work surfaces, special rails and a shop, all in the name of giving St Luke's a centrepiece for its public awareness and fundraising activities. RMS, which supports the hospice on a pro bono basis, then stepped in to the driving seat to steer the vehicle onto the BBC, Channel 4 and into news outlets as far afield as the United States, South Africa, India and Thailand. The interior: plush Agency director Peter Davis said that the project had been "great fun" for the team.St Luke’s corporate fundraiser Karen Burns said of the finished product, now named Luke: “Bentley’s support has been invaluable to us over the past three years and we are astounded by our new community bus. “This is a world-first, a community charity bus finished to Bentley standard, with plush leather interiors and Bentley wings on show to promote our relationship with the organisation. “As a charity, we could only dream about Luke undergoing such a transformation. What we have is not only unique, but is also a practical tool for us to share the St Luke’s story.” www.rmspr.co.uk Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
