Following an additional investment of £750k from the NWDA, Cheshire’s Year of Gardens 2008, is to increase its marketing and promotional activities.

The RDA is hoping the additional investment will enable the county to complement Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture and help position Cheshire as a leading destination for gardens.

The Year of Gardens initiative plans to develop a variety of events across the county and create a new arts and cultural programme based on Cheshire’s gardens.

Chris Brown, chief executive of Visit Chester and Cheshire (VCC) said: “This project will give Cheshire’s visitor economy a major boost, with an expected £15million return. Our aim is to position Cheshire’s gardens in the international arena and make sure there is a long lasting legacy beyond 2008.”

Emma Tatlow, VCC’s marketing person told How-Do that she and the team at VCC would be starting to work up ideas for the 08 campaign in the coming months.

She did however say that she expected VCC’s current suppliers of marketing services to be actively involved in the development of the marketing plans.

Current suppliers include Weber Shandwick in Manchester for consumer PR and Hems de Winter in Chester for local PR and corporate when required.

VCC has a number of agencies on its roster for print and advertising including Finch in Liverpool, Access in Manchester and KM Creative in Chester.

The organisation was using Mediavest Manchester to buy its media but has recently moved the media buying to the COI (Central Office of Information) unit in Manchester as Tatlow believed the unit could “get better rates” from the COI team. She stressed however that the COI’s involvement predated news of the additional funding and that no ads have yet been booked to support the 2008 initiative.

Tatlow would not disclose the anticipated total marketing spend beyond confirming it would run into six figures.
