CIPR gives PM some PR | Print |  Email to a friend

CIPR gives PM some PR
Gordon Brown’s PR was the main talking point at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations ’ Northern Conference in Manchester.

With the media spotlight firmly on the Prime Minister, delegates decided to offer up some help for the beleaguered Brown.

Andy Green of Green Communications led the topic and recommended that Brown should assert calmness in a crisis, using his soothing tone of voice to take the heat out of panics.

He also felt that he should be strong in adversity, using his own experiences; identify enemies and make an example of them; get out and about; and roll up his shirt sleeves to show he’s a man of action and energy.

We’ll see if his advisors were listening over the next week in Manchester. Although we recommend he doesn’t “get out and about” near a certain North West betting chain near the Midland Hotel or his PR team will be on overtime...

Also at the conference was former News of the World editor and later reputation management specialist Phil Hall.

"Media City announced that we will soon learn of major other names which
will be coming to Salford to complement the BBC's involvement,” said Dave Sanders, chairman of the CIPR North West,

“It’s been an eye-opening day, and who knows, we may see some of the above PR
strategies being applied by the Government's spin-machine in Manchester next week."

The next CIPR event will be the annual PRide Awards on 19th November at the Hilton Hotel on Deansgate.

PR agencies should steer clear of politics as it blurs the line of being ethical or being spin merchants. Leave it to specialists and try and distance yourselves from them as an industry and it might help the PR industry's PR rather than lumping you in with the liars.

I would define PR as being about getting you the reputation and word of mouth you deserve.
As we had a gathering of some great PR people at a conference next door to the Labour Party conference we thought we could share our expertise (which actually was quite prescient, mirroring many of the positives of his subsequent speech.)
So, we are not getting into politics, merely the PR communication side of the issue.
It's sad that politicians seemingly now have such a poor reputation we are being advised to avoid their negative halo!

Yeah but not every MP is disliked.
