Farewell then Cicero – it’s Gyro henceforth | Print |  Email to a friend
Monday, 22 October 2007
Manchester B2B agency Cicero, which was acquired by Gyro in April this year , is shedding the brand Cicero in favour of Gyro as from November.

The loss of the Cicero brand is unlikely to be compared to the situation at TBWA Manchester where the BDH brand has been dropped: Cicero never really seemed to capture the imagination in the manner of the agency’s previous name, CAS.

CAS and IAS in Macclesfield were two of the UK’s leading B2B agencies in the 90s.

Gyro employs about 50 people and agency managing director Danny Turnbull told How-Do that over £1m of sales have been added since the acquisition in April taking annualized turnover to circa £7m. Over 95% of the agency’s income is derived from business to business services.

Turnbull also added that there has been a 20% increase in the bottom line as a result of the loss of several central overhead functions to Gyro’s London HQ.

Gyro has sales of over £50m and has other offices in the States, Germany, France, Sweden and is opening an office in the Far East.

Gyro Manchester activities encompass advertising, direct marketing, digital, corporate identity, public relations, relationship marketing and events and clients include DAF Trucks, BUPA, Thomson Financial, Sigma Aldrich, Johnston Group and Tyco.

Cicero’s three main shareholders were Chairman John Gatcliffe, Charles Keirl and Mike Parker. Prior to the change of name to Cicero, CAS was one of Manchester’s longest established brands dating back to 1914.

Turnbull believes there is a big difference between Gyro and acquisitive marketing services plc’s such as Media Square and its smaller Manchester rival Hasgrove, who he believes are simply buying companies for size’s sake. Gyro he claims has clearer focus grounded in solid B2B foundations.

With the change in name comes a new emphasis on growth said Turnbull. He has tasked the agency with growth of 43% next year and is busily recruiting in several areas.

He is looking for a head of PR, a group account director and account execs, an office manager and more creatives.

Turnbull (36) joined Cicero from BJL having previously been at Gardiner Caldwell in Bollington and prior to that he worked with John Gatcliffe at CAS.
