Acclaimed retail interior design agency Judge Gill has sold a proportion of its shareholding to long-time collaborators Start Creative. The deal will see the Manchester-based Judge Gill open a new arm in Start’s London offices, while Start founders Mike Curtis and Darren Whittingham join the JG board.
When contacted about the move agency founder and MD Kevin Gill was unwilling to divulge anything beyond rudimentary details, but confirmed that the deal was now done and would mark a new era for the firm. One of the factors driving this will be the fact that Judge Gill now has the facility to establish a London base, whereas Start has a foothold in Manchester. Gill himself though denied that this was the prime motivator that had brought the teams together. “There’s more to it than that,” he commented. “The agencies complement one another. We complement them in terms of the environmental work we do and they complement us in the level of strategy they can bring to develop the business.” The agencies have worked together on numerous projects over the last two years, including designing the Virgin Mobile and Virgin Media stores in the UK. The two have also collaborated on projects for perhaps JG’s biggest client, Adidas, working on the sports giant’s stores across the globe. Speaking about the new London operation, apparently set to be run by David Judge, Gill described it as “minimal” at present but something the firm was looking to expand quickly. He also noted that they would be looking to recruit in Manchester, raising the payroll above the current 18 mark. Judge Gill, which was founded in 1993, has also worked for retail clients such as Size?, Fred Perry and Hertz. There has been no confirmation of what proportion of the shareholding Start has taken, or how much money changed hands in the deal. http://www.judgegill.co.uk/
