Manchester communications consultancy Koan has become the first business in the city to join the UN’s global corporate citizenship initiative.
Membership of the Global Compact comes following an application process where companies have to outline their commitment to human rights, sustainability and education.
It means that Koan are part of an elite group of just 144 UK companies to be members. These include BT, GlaxoSmithKline and Cadbury Schweppes. "We are looking forward to working with the UN under their 10 principles and further enhancing our contribution to society," explained Elaine Mitchel-Hill, founder and managing director.
"These are exciting times and businesses should not underestimate the opportunity they have to make a positive contribution and help shape new sustainable ways of doing business." The 10 principles that they have signed up for centre on human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption and the PR agency must ensure that their operations adhere to these and update the UN accordingly.
Koan’s clients include National Express, Marshalls, the Children’s Safety Education Foundation and Novelis.
