LOVE teams up with Peter Saville for charity album design

Manchester creative agency, LOVE, has collaborated with the designer Peter Saville on the concept around an album released in aid of the charity CALM.

Thirty One is a collection of songs by Manchester musicians made on behalf of the Factory Foundation, which was launched in memory of Tony Wilson, the former Factory records boss.

The foundation seeks to help young people change their lives through the creative industries.

All profits will go to CALM which was set up as a response to high suicide rates among young men.

The album features rare and exclusive songs by both established and emerging acts including Elbow, Everything Everything, Delphic, I Am Kloot, D/R/U/G/S, Murkage, Bad Lieutenant, Mr Scruff, Lonelady and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

LOVE design director, Chris Myers says: “CALM’s helpline is currently open for four days a week. We were asked to concept and design an album sleeve that would help raise money towards opening the helpline for seven nights a week.”

“We wanted to create something that reflects the generous spirit of CALM; something tranquil, something about communication, and something definitively from Manchester.

“So 31 songbirds represent 31 contributing artists, at rest together on a telephone wire, at the dawn of a new day.

"Super minimal and serene, the cover design evokes positive feelings about the power of listening, of strength in numbers and of a place called home.”

Esther O’Callaghan, founder of the Factory Foundation, said: "The Factory Foundation is about capturing the legacy and spirit of Factory, therefore the creative element of this release is an equally important part of the whole body of work - which is why LOVE were my first and only choice to collaborate with Peter Saville.

"That LOVE has given so much and for free and involved Thomas Cockram, who captured the perfect image which will come to define this release, is a testament to him as a photographer and them as an agency.”

Thirty One has been curated and compiled by DJ and writer Dave Haslam. It is available to pre-order at www.thirtyonesongs.com from February 13 and as a double CD from March 12. A limited edition, individually numbered vinyl LP will also be available from www.townsendrecords.com.
