MANCHESTER MASTERS STUNT POSTPONED - a statement | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 06 March 2009
Subsequent to the story that appeared on How-Do today the following statement has been issued.

The stunt that was scheduled to take place at universities in Manchester on Monday 9th March to remind students about the encroaching deadline has now been postponed until further notice.

Manchester Masters, a new initiative to attract the world’s best talent to Manchester, is accepting applications until Friday 13th March.

Students graduating in summer 2009 from Manchester Universities are able to apply for Manchester Masters. Students from any discipline are eligible to apply, as the rigorous application process is designed to find the best minds in Manchester, whatever their academic background. A major perk of the programme is that students live rent free in the city.

Manchester Masters students will battle for one of ten places, and for the opportunity to work in a variety of PR, advertising, media, digital and design agencies or companies over the course of a year, and develop and tailor their skills, personality and aptitudes to the most suited area. The programme also includes a core element of coaching, and each student will be paired with a bespoke business mentor.

Organisations involved include Warbutons, Manchester United and JW Lees as well as leading Manchester-based creative agencies.

Sandy Lindsay, project director for Manchester Masters and Tangerine MD said: “Manchester is a key destination for students however the ‘brain drain’ issue of post graduates leaving the city in pursuit of careers elsewhere, mainly London or New York, is impacting heavily on retaining this talent for businesses. We need something that will be so temping that people will fight to study in Manchester, and then when they’ve finished, something that will keep the very best in Manchester.

The story that appeared follows.

Tangerine PR has come up with a novel way of getting graduates to enrol on the Manchester Masters programme.

They’ve employed page 3 ‘stunna’ Rhian, who’ll be wandering through the universities dressed in nothing but ‘The Coat of Application Forms.’

The more forms that students grab, the more of her will be revealed.

So as not to be deemed sexist, Mr Jodie Marsh (Matt Peacock), will be doing a similar dash through the campus.

Manchester Masters gives graduates a chance to live rent free in the city and get a masters in professional practice. They’ll get the opportunity to work in a variety of PR, advertising, media, digital and design agencies or companies over the course of a year, and develop and tailor their skills, personality and aptitudes to the most suited area.

"We’ve had an incredible response from businesses wanting to get involved, hopefully this will encourage students to get their applications forms in and be in with a chance of the opportunity of a lifetime," said Sandy Lindsay, project director for Manchester Masters and Tangerine MD.

It'll certainly encourage them to get the application forms "off"...

"This programme has been put in place to make Manchester attractive to students long after they graduate. We are looking for extraordinary thinkers to apply to make this student programme the best in the country.” - Sally Lindsay, Jan 09

I'm sure we all agree the best way to engage with 'extraordinary thinkers' at university is through the use of half naked models. Why not go the whole hog and also have them carrying a sign saying "Free Beer!" ?

Oh, and let's not forget that Rhian's biog at page3.com tells us "At Bury College, she began A level courses in Law, Psychology, IT and Media, but never completed the courses due to a phobia of taking exams."

Truly shameful in every regard - and it's public money.

I happen to think it’s a great idea. To appeal to a student you have to think like one. The 'coat of applications' is obviously a spoof of the 'coat of cash' from The Sunday Night Project.

I think it's a very clever example of understanding and engaging with the correct target audience and not fobbing them off with corporate crap.

I think we need to remember that we are not students and the stunt isn’t aimed at us!

Gail, lighten up, it's Friday.

Is someone taking the piss out of us here?

Let me get this right...you plant the headline-grabbing story of "attracting the best brains by claiming there will be naked people running around the University with application forms"...

...then issue a statement which doesn't explain why the "event" has been postponed all-of-a-sudden - but conveniently happens to contain full details of the initiative...

Shame on you Tangerine for playing such silly games with people you need on your side.

Something tells me that How Do and endless others who have seen this scam will look twice at your press releases from now on...

Go and stand in the naughty corner Sandy for not telling the headmaster about your idea.

First off I would like to apologise for suggesting on Friday that the much loved ex-corrie actress and chum of Peter Kay was somehow involved in this PR cock-up. I did of course mean Sandy, not Sally.

That said it looks like the people funding this little stunt (MCC, NESTA et al) have had a quiet word - probably pointing out this is about as far from Manchester's desired positioning as original modern/science city/knowledge capital etc. as you can probably get.

But the big question is was it the How-Do 'wot won it'?

Does this mean Tangerine won't win How Do PR agency of the year for 2009?
