Contrary to reports from marketing trade titles in London, How-Do understands the short list for the £26m media planning and buying account for MFI is down to (the incumbent) Zenith in London and Universal in Prestbury.
Marketing trade titles reported in August that the shortlist had been narrowed down from five agencies to three - Walker Media, BLM and Zenith – and that Universal had not succeeded in getting through to the final stage.
However, it now appears that Universal has been involved throughout the process and is battling it out with Zenith. A decision was expected at the end of August but has been delayed.
The creative work on the work is being handled by M&C Saatchi.
Favell MFI prompted a review of its media business in the summer after appointing M&C Saatchi.
Universal recently lost its long-standing (18 years) £7m Magnet business to MediaVest Manchester. MFI Furniture Group plc sold MFI Retail to a private equity-backed management team in October 2006.
The new management team is led by Gary Favell who was previously Magnet’s chief executive. The HR director Marc Bertrand and other members of the marketing team are also ex-Magnet.
A Universal spokesperson declined to comment on MFI when questioned by How-Do.
