North West’s CIPR PRide Awards see Manchester agencies win big | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 21 November 2008
Hundreds of PR professionals gathered at the Hilton in Manchester for the Chartered Institute of Public Relations’ 2008 North West PRide Awards.

Ironically, Koan PR, which is in the process of going into administration, got the outstanding PR Consultancy of the Year Award.

How-Do was told that the Chartered Institute of Public Relations' judging was done in August and the award was given for their work between July 2005 and July 2008.

Staniforth boss Rob Brown was presented with the Outstanding PR Professional gong. Tangerine and Golley Slater picked up 3 each and Manchester Airport Group took home 2 awards.

"The PRide Awards never fail to deliver, year after year," said Dave Sanders, chairman of the CIPR North West.

"With an almost 40 per cent increase in guests attending the ceremony this year, PR professionals across the North West all want to be in with a chance of winning these sought after awards."

With Manchester agencies getting 25 of the 45 awards, no doubt it'll lead to more debate as to where the Liverpool agencies are...

More than 1500 entries were received and the results are below:

You have made a mockery of these awards.

I'm really pleased that the St Ann's Walk won Gold - well done Golley Slater for their well-handled PR plan!

Shame on the CIPR and shame on Koan. This completely undermines all the great work being done in the North West business community.

As an 'ethical' agency, Koan should not have accepted this award.

The judges naturally have some serious explaining to do here...

But let's not allow this news to detract from the talent and achievement of all the agencies awarded this year.

Well done to IAS B2B Public Relations.
- I see you guys cleared up on the night - 9 shortlisted entries, 3 Golds and 1 Silver.
B2B - its the new black, don't you know!

Utterly hilarious and worthy of a tip to Private Eye (I'm dialing the number now!) The incompetence of the CIPR is only topped by the audacity of Koan phoenixing themselves as "Ethical Comms" - oh irony of ironies!
 6 By why?, on 21-11-2008 14:07
why don't they rename the awards the manchester Pride awards. Where are all the hot Liverpool PR professionals in this list? Oh I know, they were at the Livercool awards. Hmmm.

Any thoughts on how the jolly old CIPR might be planning to handle the PR fallout on this one? Answers in the form of a comprehensive crisis management plan please
 8 By Confused, on 21-11-2008 14:29
Can someone kindly explain what exactly Koan has done to warrant such wrath? Is it that they've gone under and re-launched themselves, possibly leaving creditors? Or another reason? Why is it unethical to accept an award?

I do believe that IAS B2B Marketing won more awards than any other agency - 3 golds and 1 silver - and our PR team is ony 10 people out of an agency staff of 50. And we only do B2B. If nobody else is shouting from the rooftops about how remarkable an achievement this is, I feel it behoves me to. As for Koan, people should get off their case. I'm sure they didn't plan to go bust. This is the worst recession in modern times so there's bound to be some high profile casualties.

To reply to Confused... Koan is probably experiencing a lot of wrath from people who have come across them on either a professional or personal level. The back lash and criticism is karma as far as I am concerned!
 11 By PeterP, on 21-11-2008 15:19
Confused - it is the former as far as I am concerned! - and the poor attempt to disguise all this almost as a pre-planned and exciting strategy. there certainly is not any disgrace in going under in the current climate - but to go on about how wonderful the 'new' agency will be is a little over the top.
 12 By Confused, on 21-11-2008 18:24
Many thanks to How-Doers for putting this into context. Rather like the White Star Line offering exciting scuba diving events to the Titanic in 1912...jolly bad form.
 13 By Everbodyknowsit!, on 21-11-2008 18:24
The shame isn't that Koan went bust, it's that a bunch of incompetent judges thought that an agency that supposedly had 'ethical credentials - i.e. it recycles its paper and sends its staff to teach in Vietnam' accepted the award knowing that it had failed to run its business in a professional and proper manner. Everyone is suffering, the economic climate is concerning everyone but most owner managers understand the importance of cashflow and overhead to income ratios. Koan clearly didn't.
 14 By Hello, on 21-11-2008 17:51
Rob - we admire your public support of your team but SKV, Citypress, MC2 all do B2B PR and have won these awards for decades.
15 By great pr stunt, on 21-11-2008 17:59
this is a great pr stunt from koan - now we all know they have a new agency. job done. goodnight.
 16 By true colours, on 22-11-2008 02:30
Between the lines, not such a great stunt: 40k debts - is any owed to staff or consultants for work done? Pray, tell. If so, that would not be so "ethical." That's the stunt: "ethical" PR.

Hello Hello. Strange name Hello. Never heard anyone called that in Scotland. There are lots of valid comments re the Pride Awards on this blog, including yours, but is there a problem with you and your peers down here identifying yourselves.? North of the border we prefer to do our stabbing in the front. Its more honest that way Bye Hello.

Hello Rob. Why do you think I'm stabbing you in the back? I only made reference to the fact that you are not the only agency to do B2B PR. Plenty do in Manchester and have done for years. There's lots of business to go around so keep your knickers on!

Not surprised they went under - ask any of the NGO's they worked with

What happens now to the Magic Bean Company that was the umbrella group for Koan PR and the MAGIC BEANS CHARITABLE TRUST?
