Patrick Allen, currently head of marketing at United Co-op, will be the marketing supremo at the ‘The co-operative’, the new entity following the planned merger between the United Co-op and the Co-operative Group.
Patrick Allen The new company will have around 4,500 retail outlets and will have sales in excess of £9bn.
Allen’s main rival for the position, Zoe Morgan, currently marketing director at the Co-operative Group, will be leaving the company.
United Co-op is in the driving seat with its chief executive Peter Marks, taking the top executive job at the new company. Marks is an ex KPMG partner. Morgan said: "The values of The Co-operative have real resonance with today's consumers and I'm sure the rollout will be a great success. Whilst I will be sorry to leave the group at this exciting stage in its development, I fully respect the new chief executive's decision to appoint his own marketing director."
Morgan joined the Co-op in 2004 from HBOS Retail, where she was group marketing director. Prior to that she was strategic marketing director at Boots.
The merger of the two businesses is expected to complete on 29 July.
